In this Festival anniversary year we have Director F.W.Murnau&#8217;s <strong>Faust<\/strong> of 1926 accompanied by Ben Hall (Head of Music at the University of Chichester) on the organ.<\/p>\n<p>Better known for his 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu, (shown at St John&#8217;s in 2013 accompanied by Ben on the organ) Murnau&#8217;s equally impressive but often overlooked <strong>Faust<\/strong> is the chilling story of Faust (played by Gosta Ekman), an old and disheartened alchemist who forms a pact with Satan&#8217;s evil demon, Mephisto (Emil Jannings).<\/p>\n<p>This expressionist black and white masterpiece, uses clever optical trickery, vibrant costumes and sets and employs every element &#8211; fire, wind, smoke, and lightning &#8211; to produce the film&#8217;s dark and menacing tone. Many are in remote locations with wonderful sounding names such as Upton Cressett, Theddlethorpe, Markham Clinton, Skelton-cum-Newby, Croome d&#8217;Abitot. It is split into 4 periods-Saxon\/Norman, Medieval, Stuart and Georgian-including \u00a0St Johns, which is bang-up-to date with a mention of our 200th commemorative Evensong held in September 2013 -and Victorian.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A concise history of each church is given with very impressive photographs &#8211; the author being a professional photographer with a particular interest in church architecture. There are many references to the well-known Pevsner&#8217;s \u00a0architectural \u00a0guides.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It constitutes an excellent advertisement for the work carried out by The Churches Conservation Trust \u00a0since the 1960&#8217;s. \u00a0Most of the churches featured were taken on by them\u00a0in the 1970&#8217;s, often working in partnership with other bodies such as the National Trust.
